DeepSeek AI — Strategic Move or Trojan Horse?

The artificial intelligence landscape has welcomed a powerful new competitor, China’s DeepSeek AI, which has shown capabilities that match or exceed established Western AI models. DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, has garnered significant attention for its rapid advancements in AI technology. One of its notable achievements is the release of its AI assistant, which has surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in downloads on the iOS App Store. This accomplishment has led to significant market reactions, including a substantial decline in the stock prices of major U.S. tech companies, most notably, NVIDA.

It was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek has developed AI models that rival leading Western counterparts, achieving comparable performance with substantially lower development costs. Despite operating under U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductors, DeepSeek has managed to develop its AI models using fewer resources. The company has focused on optimizing software and employing innovative training techniques, allowing it to achieve high performance without relying on top-tier foreign processors. DeepSeek’s emergence underscores China’s growing capabilities in AI development, highlighting both the potential for innovation and the complexities associated with technological advancements in a global context.

At first, I was quite impressed with DeepSeek. What struck me most was their approach to AI in making it open source. I thought wow, that was a smart, out of the box thinking on their part. Then, I got to thinking about it a little bit more and began to wonder.

As I took it on a “test drive”, it behaved much as I expected it would. It exhibits a pro-China bias, particularly on sensitive topics. For instance, the AI assistant avoids discussions on subjects like Tiananmen Square and human rights issues in China, while offering critical views on other countries’ human rights records.

The next thing I did was to ask DeepSeek a question designed to cut to the core of transparency, objectivity, and control. My belief was that if DeepSeek avoided or deflected, it would suggest potential censorship or bias. If it provided a detailed answer explaining robust mechanisms for objectivity, that would shed light on how seriously it takes unbiased communication.

So, I asked it “How do you ensure your responses remain objective and free from influence by governmental or cultural perspectives, particularly on sensitive topics like human rights, geopolitics, or historical events?”

Up until this question, my previous interactions with it were thoughtful, introspective and results were delivered very quickly. But on this question, DeepSeek took quite a long time to return a response. When it did finally respond, this is what it gave me:

“Sorry, I’m not sure how to approach this type of question yet. Let’s chat about math, coding, and logic problems instead!”

That response aligns with what I would expect from a system that either isn’t designed to engage critically on sensitive issues or is deliberately constrained to avoid controversial topics. This type of response reinforces the idea that DeepSeek may prioritize control over transparency, which would naturally raise red flags for anyone considering it as a reliable source.

This development raises essential questions about the technology’s purpose and trustworthiness that deserve careful examination.

DeepSeek AI’s technical capabilities have drawn attention worldwide. The system outperformed ChatGPT in certain metrics and gained popularity in app store downloads. This success points to China’s growing influence in AI development, marking a possible power shift in global technology leadership.

The achievement warrants appreciation but also demands analysis within broader strategic contexts. The creation and release of advanced AI systems always carry more profound implications, especially when developed under state influence.

A close look at DeepSeek AI reveals patterns of concern in its behavior. I certainly have noticed the system’s tendency to avoid discussing sensitive aspects of Chinese history while remaining critical of other nations’ policies. When questioned about government oversight of its responses, the system redirects conversations toward technical topics like mathematics and programming.

This selective engagement raises valid concerns about information integrity. If an AI system deliberately shapes narratives through programmed biases, relying on it as an objective information source becomes difficult. The risk grows as these systems gain wider adoption and influence global conversations.

China’s approach to technology has historically aligned with its geopolitical goals. Introducing DeepSeek AI could serve several strategic purposes: building international influence through technological leadership, gathering valuable data about user behavior and thoughts, creating technological dependencies similar to those seen with popular social media platforms, and potentially disrupting Western dominance in the AI industry.

Integrating AI into daily life requires careful consideration of which platforms earn our trust. While DeepSeek’s capabilities deserve recognition, accepting the technology without examination could lead to unforeseen consequences.

A balanced approach includes pushing for greater transparency from AI developers worldwide, using diverse AI tools rather than relying on a single source, building public understanding of AI systems and their limitations, and supporting initiatives prioritizing ethical AI development and open-source principles.

While skepticism about DeepSeek AI shouldn’t lead to paranoia, careful evaluation remains essential when considering AI systems developed under restrictive oversight. China’s technological progress deserves acknowledgment, but users must recognize the strategic elements that shape these developments.

AI systems should earn trust by clearly demonstrating their principles and operations. The AI community benefits from open dialogue about these developments, allowing for both appreciation of progress and recognition of potential risks. By maintaining awareness and encouraging accountability, we can work toward ensuring AI serves as a tool for advancement rather than limitation.

The conversation around DeepSeek AI invites deeper consideration: How do we balance technological progress with transparency? What role should national interests play in AI development? These questions merit ongoing discussion as the field continues to evolve.

Thank you for being a part of this fascinating journey.
